An Adelaide Hills man has avoided further jail time after being caught with an arsenal of unregistered guns in a secret room in 2019.

Paul Victor Hofmann, 56, was initially charged with 427 firearm offences following a raid of his Brukunga property in September 2019.

Last November he pleaded guilty to 87 firearms offences and has spent 13 months in jail for possessing a large illegal haul in a secret room at his home, including parts of a sub-machine gun, along with rifles, dangerous handguns and Zulu spears.

The Court heard Hofmann hoped to become a gun dealer and was registered to own 36 firearms.

On Friday 1 July, District Court Judge Jo-Anne Deuter handed down a suspended sentence of three years and one month with a non-parole period of two years as he had already served time in jail. Hofmann has also had his gun collection confiscated and has been banned from ever owning another firearm.
