Newly Appointed Council CEO Asked to Step Down

Just two days after the City of Onkaparinga announced their new Chief Executive Officer, he has been let go.

Alastair Dawson, former Vice President of Central Queensland University and CEO of Rockamption Regional Council, was announced new CEO on Monday.

However he attracted controversy earlier this year when he called Australian of the Year, Grace Tame, ‘childish’ in a social media post. Some local residents created a petition against his appointment this week and had been planning to hold a protest in July.

Acting Mayor, Simon McMahon said Council has received feedback from the community and staff on the matter, which has led to the decision.

“In light of the feedback, and with the best interests of the community and council’s employees in mind, Alastair Dawson and the City of Onkaparinga have mutually agreed not to proceed with the intended appointment of Mr Dawson as CEO, Acting Mayor, Simon McMahon said.

“Council confirms that expenses incurred by council are limited to reimbursement for preliminary relocation costs only. These costs are less than $10,000."

The CEO recruitment process will be paused until after the November local government elections. Until that time Julia Grant will continue to serve as acting CEO.
