There is a strong case for a new bike trail linking the Adelaide Hills to other significant wine regions across the state.

The Adelaide Wine Capital Cycle Trail would link McLaren Vale to the Adelaide Hills, up into the Barossa and across to the Clare Valley, under a plan to help aid the recovery of the state’s regions out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six councils representing the 22 towns have signed a memorandum of understanding in a bid to develop the 250km path project.

Expert in community rejuvenation, Peter Kenyon, from consultancy firm 'Bank of I.D.E.A.S' has told the ABC that regional areas would likely see a rise in domestic tourism.

"Our towns and our rural areas are just going to have to be smarter about how we entice people. Big events are certainly not going to draw people in," he told the ABC.

The RAA has today thrown its support behind the plan, with spokesperson Charles Mountain telling Adelaide Now it would not only be great for regional tourism but for the many RAA members who are also cyclists.
