Lion mother to pen new book

One of the mothers of Saroo Brierley, whose story inspired the tear-jerking film Lion, says a book is on the way giving more insight into her own story and that of his Indian mother.

Lion stole hearts upon its release last year as it told the true story of Brierley's unlikely journey to find his Indian birth parents, using Google Earth from his adopted home of Tasmania.

The Australian film, directed by Garth Davis, claimed 12 AACTA awards out of 12 nominations in Sydney.

Backstage at the event on Wednesday night, Sue Brierley - who along with her husband John adopted Saroo from an orphanage in Calcutta - says there's more to be told.

"The film Lion and Saroo's book A Long Way Home originally, gave a taster of this story, and it's a big story. It encompasses the stories of so many different people," she told reporters.

"But for me it's also important that the mothers' stories are elaborated on.

"So I'll be working with Saroo on a book, which I'll be starting as soon as I get home."

Brierley, who is played by Nicole Kidman in Lion, said she thinks there is more to the story that might "reawaken a bit of compassion and humanity".

She also called on other women to mother a child "that has not got one".

"Saroo's been so fortunate after 25 years to have two," she said.

"And we hope that (the story will) lift the sharing and caring humanity of Australians."
