Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer released

Disney and Lucasfilm has unveiled the highly anticipated theatrical trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi on ESPN's Monday Night Football in the US.

It's the latest look at the new film since Disney released the first teaser in April.

The new footage debuted during halftime of the NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears.

The studios also released the latest poster for the film, in which Luke Skywalker takes centre stage, on Monday.

The Last Jedi picks up where The Force Awakens left off.

Rian Johnson wrote and directed the sequel starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Davis, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members include Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.

Fisher had wrapped shooting before she died in December 2016, making The Last Jedi her final film role.

Though she was expected to appear in Episode IX, Lucasfilm said there are no plans to digitally recreate Fisher in any upcoming Star Wars projects.

The Last Jedi hits US theatres on December 15.
