This Sunday, 20 October, a diverse lineup of drivers, passengers, and classic vehicles will take part in the iconic Bay to Birdwood motoring event, traveling from West Beach to the Adelaide Hills.
“The thousands of spectators who gather at the start in West Beach, line the 67km route, and meet the vehicles at the finish in Birdwood are in for a special treat this year,” says Paul Rees, Head of Major Events at the History Trust of SA.
“Every vehicle in the Bay to Birdwood is special, all 1500 of them, but there are some real standouts to watch this year.”
Murray Bridge couple Phoebe and Brad Bainbridge will be taking part for the first time with their pride and joy, a 1966 Humber Super Snipe (pictured).
Brad has told ARN’s Adam Connelly and Jennie Lenman that he bought it over in New South Wales to bring back to South Australia when he was just 14 years old.
“I bought it not running, my dad helped me pick it up on a trailer… we got it running and slowly did some work on it and tidied it up to the car it is today,” Brad told ARN’s Adam and Jennie.
The beautiful car has been featured in many important occasions for the couple and their family and friends over the years.
“It’s been in six weddings of our friends, plus our own, it was very sentimental,” Phoebe Bainbridge said.
Notable other participants in Sunday’s Bay to Birdwood include media commentator and journalist Annabel Crabb who will be driving a 1959 Chrysler Royal; Dr Richard ‘Harry’ Harris OAM – Australian of the Year, riding with his family in a 1939 Chevrolet Master ‘Woody,’ alongside descendants of explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins; Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC – Governor of South Australia, traveling in a 1960 Dodge Phoenix; and The Hon Blair Boyer MP – Minister for Education, driving with his family in a 1926 Chrysler 60.
Spectators can catch an early glimpse of the historical vehicles and their colorful participants at Barratt Reserve, West Beach, with the first cars departing at 8:15am. Vehicles will start arriving at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood from 9:30am onwards.
