The Victor Harbor Mayor had a tear in her eye when she spoke about the opening of the long-awaited Fleurieu Study Hub last week.

Moira Jenkins told ARN’s Adam and Jennie that she is very passionate about keeping local students in the region as they study their tertiary degrees.

“One of the big things for students in rural and regional areas is when they go to university, they have to leave home, they have to leave their friends, they have to leave their job and the biggest drop out of university students are from rural and regional areas in their first year,” Mayor Moira Jenkins told us.

“So the Government’s been looking at a different model for universities, there’s a number of people that have been really advocating for this. I can remember when I was in Canberra a couple of years ago I stood up and said, ‘we’ve got to have a study hub down here,’ and Rebekha Sharkie our Federal Member has been really advocating on our behalf and we got the funding for it.”

Located at TAFE SA Victor Harbor, the new facilities provide access to Wi-Fi, computers, video conferencing and quiet study areas for the students who wish to study remotely from the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The new facility also offers a free space to meet with student advisors who can provide advice and support on career pathways, industry experience options, how to enrol, extra support resources and remote study expertise.

The Rural City of Murray Bridge in partnership with the City of Victor Harbor officially opened the new Fleurieu Study Hub (FSH) on Thursday 19 September.

The initiative has been made possible by funding through the Australian Government’s Regional University Study Hubs Program and through the support of key partner agencies, including Murray Bridge’s existing program the Murray River Study Hub and RDA Adelaide Hills Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu councils.
