Round Seventeen Footy Wrap – 19th August

The local footy finals are almost upon us; three leagues are now just a round away, while the Country division’s last round on Saturday produced a dramatic sprint to the finish. Catch up on all the action here:

HILLS FOOTBALL LEAGUE (Division One results here, Country Division results here)

A dramatic final round in the Hills Footy League Country Division has seen Macclesfield miss out on a finals spot despite an upset win, with Meadows holding them off with a win of their own.

Macclesfield came from behind at three quarter time to beat Kangarilla, however fell half a game short of a return to finals after Meadows stopped a strong surge from Kersbrook to win by 18, locking them into fourth. 

The first week of finals will see Birdwood play Kersbrook in the first qualifying final, while Meadows and Kangarilla will face off in the elimination final. 

Over in Division One, an inaccurate Nairne Bremer got the win over fellow finals side Uraidla Districts by 16 points, while Mount Lofty, Hahndorf and Lobethal all won.

GREAT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

Encounter Bay have announced themselves as a flag threat in the Great Southern on Saturday, beating the in-form McLaren Districts by 15 points.

In the battle of the Eagles, Encounter Bay came out on top to compress an already tight race for the top three, setting up a match next week with Myponga-Sellicks in which the winner can lock in a double chance while the loser will play in the elimination final against Langhorne Creek. 

In other matches, Victor Harbor secured the minor premiership with a big win over Langhorne Creek, while Willunga and Strathalbyn both grabbed victories. 

RIVER MURRAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

The Coorong Cats have sent another resounding statement to the River Murray competition with just one round left before finals, after they thrashed fellow contenders Jervois by 110 points on Saturday. 

The undefeated Cats conceded just one goal all game with it coming in the last quarter, furthering their favouritism ahead of a strong field.

The other matches of the round were also blowouts, with Southern Mallee, Imperial and Mypolonga all gaining big percentage boosts.
