Three creatures are set to become the ‘Guardians’ of Mount Barker’s Keith Stephenson Park.
A brown tree frog, a long-necked turtle, and a river rat will be featured in the soon-to-be transformed play space.
The Mt Barker District Council chose the three species because they are native to the area and are likely inhabitants of the creek that runs through the park.
Mount Barker District residents are invited to participate in a competition to name the creatures between 1 October to 22 October.
Judges will be looking for names that fit within the following themes: Creativity, Humour, Heritage and history, Nature, Indigenous, Sustainability, Catchiness.
Winners will receive a package of local prizes and will be invited to the official opening of the playground, where the chosen names will be announced.
Mayor David Leach of Mt Barker said the competition aims to continue community involvement with the projec and helps to enhance a sense of community ownership of the space.
“We believe that by involving our residents, especially children, in this naming process, we can create a more welcoming and enjoyable space for families,” Mayor Leach said.
The project is partially funded by an Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program grant.
The fully fenced, accessible, and inclusive playground will feature picnic structures, interactive elements, shaded areas, and water play facilities to ensure it becomes a much-loved hub of community activity.
