A popular new Adelaide Fringe exhibit in a steam train passage in the Southern Foothills is bringing a hidden part of our history to light.
The Sleep’s Hill Railway Tunnels used to be part of the old Adelaide-to-Melbourne train line, which was constructed in 1879 and used until 1919.
In more recent years the dual tunnels at Panorama have been used for mushroom growing and wine storage by former Mitcham Councillor Dave Munro.
Adelaide Fringe CEO Heather Croall approached him to host an exhibit in the tunnels after she was inspired by a event in the United Kingdom.
Novatech, the people behind Illuminate Adelaide, have worked with various artists to create a colourful, imaginative light installation as part of the exhibit.
Dave said that the team has created an atmosphere that is appealing to everyone.
“The older people who are interested in history, the kids that come through and are entertained. They have just done it so beautifully, so respectfully and I’m just so proud of what we’ve all achieved with this exhibition,” Dave Munro said to ARN’s Adam Connelly and Jennie Lenman this morning.
