Dog owners who like to take their pets for walks along beaches, reserves, sand dunes and wetlands in the Fleurieu Peninsula, may have fewer options in future.

The Onkaparinga Council is reviewing dog on-leash and dog prohibited areas at 15 sites across the region.

Proposed changes would mean imposing restrictions in some areas that currently have none and varying restrictions in other areas.

The review responds to community feedback received during the Dog By-law consultation in 2022 and addresses a key requirement of its Animal Management Plan.

The Fleurieu sites up for review are Hart Road wetland in Aldinga Beach; McLaren Flat wetland; a section of Port Noarlunga beach; and South Port sand dunes in Port Noarlunga.

The council proposes to change the off-limits Hart Road Wetland to an on-leash area to allow access to nearby walking trails.

The unrestricted McLaren Flat wetlands and the South Port sand dunes could also become on-leash areas at all times to better protect the environment.

Currently dogs are prohibited on Port Noarlunga Beach during between 10am and 8pm during Daylight Saving time. Proposed changes would ban dogs at all times during Daylight Saving.
