A learner motorcyclist has had his bike impounded after he was caught allegedly speeding on the freeway this morning, evading police and returning a positive breath test for alcohol.
Just after 3am today, Friday 8 December, police spotted a motorcyclist believed to be travelling at 150km/h in a 110km/h zone on the South Eastern Freeway near Totness.
Patrols tried to stop the motorbike as it headed off the freeway at the Mount Barker Ramp but they lost sight of it as it was seen heading towards Hahndorf.
Police say while the motorbike was seen about 15 minutes later on Adelaide Road, the rider took off at speed once again.
It is alleged that when a second patrol attended the registered owner’s Milang address, the rider saw officers at his front door and attempted to take off again but as the bike suffered a mechanical failure, he stopped and surrendered to police.
The rider was breath tested and allegedly provided a positive result of 0.054. With a learner’s permit, he was required to have zero alcohol in his system.
The 25-year-old man from Milang was arrested and charged with exceeding the speed limit, dangerous driving to escape a police pursuit and two counts of contravening a condition of his learner’s licence. He was granted police bail to appear in Mount Barker Magistrates Court on 11 January.
The motorbike was defected and impounded for 28 days.
