A young girl from Strathalbyn, who begged her mum to take her to the recent community meeting about the closure of the local Kalimna Aged Care Hostel, has taken matters into her own hands, writing to the SA Health Minister.
13 year old Isabella Spencer has called on Jack Snelling to reopen Kalimna, which was shut down without warning recently, its residents sent off to other facilities away from the town.
Isabella says she was inspired by a speaker at the meeting who said people power can change decisions, also starting a change.org petition which has already attracted over 90 signatures in less than 24 hours. Her mother Andrea saying she almost didn't take her to the meeting as it was on a school night.
"When she first told me she wanted to go to the Strathalbyn town meeting I told her she couldn't because it was a school night. After her begging for an hour I gave in and took her. Since the town meeting she has written letters, done online and paper petitions, youtube clips and more. She desperately wants to see Kalimna opened"
Kalimna failed fire safety standards after it was reclassified from a low dependency facility to high dependency which requires residents be able to be wheeled out of the building still in their beds.
This is despite the residents at Kalmina still being mobile.
